International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

Year 2000 and beyond
IWD is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.

Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'.

So make a difference, think globally and act locally !! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

We received a call from a friend who advised us that Papierhouse was being wrongfully accused of copyright and unoriginality.

Unfortunately, in all industries, there are those who think that you can speak your mind, without obtaining all the facts, and do so without thinking about the consequences of their actions.

Slanderous and Defamatory comments about one or ones business are not taken lightly. As teachers, we learn techniques from various sources and apply these techniques in our work, in turn teaching others. "Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts or information, nor does it protect styles, techniques or methods" - Quoted from the Copyright Council.

When we design workshops, if we have learnt a special "technique" or "style" from someone, we will always credit the artist. As designers, we understand the importance of this acknowledgment, even if it is not a legal requirement. Many teachers are inspired by others. It is this inspiration that keeps our craft alive and teaches others about the importance of memory keeping. It is here where our focus should be.

At Papierhouse, we are original, ethical and definately not fradulent within ourselves or our business. We are inspired by those in our industry and we give credit where credit is due. We design our own products, classes and workshops ethically and with intent to provide our clients (our friends), the information and techniques they need, to pursue their papercrafting passions".

Have you heard about Circle Journal Swap?

Here's a little history about Circle Journal which was called Round Robins then.

It started several centuries ago where ladies only quilted, cross-stitched or did needle work for pleasure and because they lived several miles away from their neighbor and friend and travel was not easy, therefore they were unable to share their ideas and techniques with each other.

Round Robins were started so that women could communicate and share techniques with each other.

The person who start the project will decide on the theme or tip & techniques they would like to share. After deciding the theme, they will work on the craft and send it to the next person who was participating in the Round Robin. The person will work on the item based on the theme and pass it to the next person in line. The item will go one round and finally after passing the item to all the participants the craft will be returned back to the person who started the project.

Stamping Swap

Calling all Stamp lover! If you love stamp images we are having a stamping swap this month at our forum.

I will send one set of papers to the first participant and she will stamp 2 designs on each paper in the stack and post the stack to the next person and the next person will add 2 more designs on the paper and post to the next person. This will go on until the last person and she will stamps and send the whole lot back to me and I will fill up the empty space and forward everyone a sheet of paper filled with stamp images

We are looking for a Team of Girls who enjoy using Sketches for their Layouts. We will post a sketch by Ed on April 1st and we hope to see your layouts using Ed's Sketch. We will pick 3 Girls to be on Ed's Sketch Design Team specially for PapierHouse at the end of the month. Designers will work with their own products and will be on Ed's Sketch Design Team for a term of 6 months. You will be featured @ PapierHouse Blog. It's not stressful as it's only one sketch a month. You will receive a sketch 2~3 weeks beforehand so there's ample time to create a page and to send us your work. At the end of 6 months, PapierHouse will reward our Designers with a small RAK to show our appreciation. Participants using Ed's Sketch will stand to win a Mini RAK Prize every month. Sounds fun isn't it?
